How To Increase Focus & Productivity with Essential Oils – My Top 5 Favourites for Focus & How to Combine Them!

These 5 essential oils are my absolute favourites, that wake me up, get me focused and bring me clarity of mind so I can get more done, be more productive and… Well, honestly, they smell good too!

With Victoria returning to lockdown, I hope that these essential oils help you if you’re back to working or studying from home. Also, with more time being spent at home lately, you might simply find that these are wonderful scents to fill your home with! Using a diffuser with these essential oils helps me feel energised and freshens my room and home, without the use of incense smoke which isn’t the best if you have pets!

There are so many essential oils out there, it's hard to know where to start. In today's video & blog post, I'd love to share 5 essential oils that can increase your focus, productivity, mental clarity, concentration, and wellbeing - plus give you a few blend suggestions!

There is also a little surprise for you today - a totally FREE reference guide! To celebrate the launch of my weekly newsletter, I wanted to offer a little something to say thank you. To get your free PDF copy of the ‘5 Essential Oils for Focus Quick Guide’, all you need to do is subscribe to my weekly newsletter below! But more on that soon, first let’s delve into the essential oils we’re talking about today.

I hope you enjoy learning about essential oils with me today! But before I talk about my favourite 5 for focus, let me just put out a quick disclaimer. I am not affiliated with any essential oil company, but I do genuinely love Eco Modern Essentials for their ethics that I am totally in alignment with, their high-quality products and their awesome service!

I don’t know much about any other essential oil brands, but I can definitely recommend Eco Modern Essentials. I’ll have a link down below to their website and another favourite website of mine to buy all kinds of eco-friendly goodies including essential oils, Flora and Fauna. Again, not sponsored or affiliated, though if I was going to be, these companies are ones that I would 100% love to collaborate with if I had the chance!

I also feel like it’s necessary to say, before we start talking about essential oils, that though I use them daily and find them super helpful in many ways, any kind of natural healing method (even crystal healing as mentioned in last week’s video), does not replace seeking professional medical care if needed. Always consult your doctor and do your own research. And be very careful to understand how to use essential oils correctly, especially if you are applying them to your skin or ingesting anything!

On that note, if you do want to know more about using essential oils, let me know! I mostly use the following essential oils in my diffuser. Diffusing essential oils is my go-to method on the daily, as I believe it’s the simplest way to incorporate these lovely scents into your life!

So, all that being said, let’s talk about my favourite 5 essential oils for increased focus. And then I’d love to share a few suggestions for how to create some wonderful blends too! If you’re curious to learn more about any of the following essential oils, you’ll find more information, resources and recommendations below.

My Top 5 Favourite Essential Oils for Focus

~

Rosemary Essential Oil

Invigorating, Comforting

Studies have shown that rosemary essential oil can help improve focus and memory.

Rosemary is one of the first essential oils I purchased, years ago, simply because I love how it smells! I love cooking with rosemary, too. It’s a very comforting, earthy and familiar scent and a very versatile essential oil. It’s a great one to incorporate into so many different products, and it can be used in so many different ways. I’m not surprised to find research that backs up what I already know from personal experience – both on its own or in a blend, Rosemary really helps me to focus!

As I’ll continue to say for every essential oil I talk about today, I’ve been experimenting for a while now, and I’ve found that once the scent of Rosemary fills the air, I feel like my productivity, clarity of mind and concentration majorly improves!

Based on a 2012 study: “Research indicates that inhaling rosemary oil helps prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical important for thinking, concentration and memory. When 20 young adults were asked math questions in a small room diffused with rosemary oil, their speed and accuracy increased in direct proportion to the duration the oil was diffused. Additionally, their blood levels of certain rosemary compounds likewise increased — illustrating that rosemary can enter your body through breathing alone.” (Source).

It’s also suggested that rosemary can help with muscle aches and pains including headaches, clear sinuses, aid digestion, and even help treat and prevent hair loss, though more studies may be needed.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Fresh, Awakening

Peppermint has such a refreshing scent that can really help with mental clarity. It’s also well known for helping to clear sinuses, reduce headaches and to relieve muscle and joint pain. You may have heard that peppermint tea can be a great aid for digestion, too!

If I feel like I need a little pick me up, peppermint is always my go-to. I feel like it adds great energy to the room and helps to clear my mind. I also love to use peppermint, or blends including peppermint, when I have a headache or to clear my sinuses. If you want to get started with essential oils, I believe that peppermint is a must to have around!

~

Lemon Essential Oil

Energising, Refreshing

Another truly refreshing scent is lemon! If you’re feeling a little low energy, lemon will help wake you up and regain that focus. I find that lemon is a very clean and invigorating scent. If it’s too much for you on it’s own, it’s a fantastic addition to many blends – which I will talk about soon!

Other than boosting energy, lemon can also help with digestion, circulation and is fantastic for its antibacterial properties. Like rosemary essential oil, lemon is very versatile and can be used in so many different ways, too! If you’re interested in creating any natural home cleaning products, I’d encourage you to look into lemon essential oil! (I can share more about that in the future too if you like, let me know!)

Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Zesty, Uplifting

I find that orange essential oil wakes me up while adding a lovely calm, positive mood to my room. It’s such a refreshing, uplifting and energising scent, and another fantastic addition to blends – orange plus peppermint does wonders for improving my concentration, and helps wake me up during the mid-afternoon slump! It’s my go-to if I want a little mood boost too.

Orange reportedly can also aid your digestive system and is well known for being fantastic in skincare products.

Black Pepper Essential Oil

Sweet & Spicy, Motivating

When I first picked up black pepper essential oil, I was not expecting it to smell as good as I think it does! It has a lovely woody aroma… It’s really quite lovely, and I find myself drawn to it all the time. I feel like it increases my energy, helps me maintain focus, and keeps me motivated and productive!

I’d love to try it diluted and applied to my skin too, as black pepper can reportedly help ease muscle aches and pains as well.

I have a few different favourite blends that work wonders along with black pepper too!

A Few of my Favourite Blends

~

Rosemary, Peppermint & Lemon

  • Equal parts (2 drops of each in a diffuser)

  • A wonderful balance of the fresh and uplifting scents of peppermint and lemon met with the comforting and woody aroma of Rosemary… It makes for a lovely combination that helps to boost energy and increase focus!

~

Sweet Orange & Peppermint

  • Equal parts (3-4 drops of each in a diffuser)

  • This blend is zingy and fresh, and super energising! I love adding these two scents to my diffuser when I really need to be productive. It’s like a ‘let’s do this!’ kind of blend! It’s not the sweetest smelling, but it sure is the most awakening. When you don’t have time to nap and you’ve probably had far too much coffee already, try this blend – I hope that it helps you too!

~

Lemon, Peppermint & Lavender

  • Equal parts (2 drops of each in a diffuser)

  • I’ve added Lavender to the mix for this blend because sometimes you want to focus and mental clarity, while also imbuing a sense of calm and ease any anxiety you might feel. Try experimenting with different ratios, depending on what effect you want to achieve! You could even start the day with less lavender, and as the end of the day approaches, raise the lavender levels to get you ready to switch off from work mode!

  • I can share the benefits of lavender essential oil in the future if you like. It’s once again one of my all-time favourites, and a highly popular scent that you likely already know a fair bit about! I often use lavender on its own or in different blends, especially before bed as it helps to improve sleep.

~

I love experimenting with different combinations of essential oils all the time! As I play around with it more and figure out some great blends, I’ll be sure to share them with you guys, if that’s something you’d be interested in! There are so many other essential oils and blends that would help for focus too, but the ones shared here today are the most accessible and affordable, in my experience. They are also versatile and can be used for so many other benefits, too. If you’re just getting started with essential oils, check out all the resources below for way more information if you’re curious to learn more too!

Another positive to diffusing essential oils that really helps me is how they set the tone of the room. Whatever it is I’m about to do, whether it’s work/study/meditate/sleep/chill, whatever it may be, choosing an essential oil that fits the moment can really help! There’s an essential oil for any occasion, and you really can’t go wrong.

Worst case, you try something you really don’t like – then just clean out the diffuser and start again. Learning anything takes time and practice, so just be patient, and be sure to write down your favourite blends as you go! I’ve definitely forgotten a few because I haven’t written them down at the time…
